The Air Force often identifies targets from the air. That's how mistakes
get made. The ground troops identify artillery targets, and call for fire.
The guns don't roam around on their own looking for something to shoot.
Crusader can operate as a single gun, in a Support by Indirect Fire
Position (SIFP) where it "dances" -- it shoots, moves, shoots
again. All the functions needed, from position location to computation of
the mission, are on board. It can shoot Multiple Round, Simultaneous
Impact (MRSI) missions, putting 8 rounds into the air, on different
trajectories, at different velocities, and have them all hit the same
target at the same time. It has automatic loading, and can load about 3
times as fast as the Paladin (our present 155 howitzer.) It has "cool
cannon" technology, so it can continue to fire at the maximum rate
indefinitely.
One gun can equal a battery (6 guns) of Paladin. It also has much greater
range and accuracy.
It has tactical applications that no other artillery system in the world
has -- it is, to put it mildly, revolutionary.
