From my experience, sleeve bearings are useless, and loud. After very
little time (depending on the environment they're in - hardwood floors,
smokers, pets, sawdust....) they pack with dust, start to make noise,
and quickly stop working...

I've got one here that's so bad, I can barely turn it with my fingers,
let alone have the weak motor crank it around... removed it from a
power supply, spliced in a Vantec Stealth (21db) ball-bearing fan, and
the unit's back in service. No surprise, it was overheating and
shutting down.

I routinely rip out any/all sleeve bearing fans that might come in a
chassis and replace them with the Vantec Stealths, where possible. I
even replaced the two in the front of my Powerware 9125 UPS, and the
noise level in my office dropped appreciably... (when you consider
there's 6 PC's running in here... every little bit helps!)
