Going from 4.2 to 5.1 isn't a "simple" upgrade. In fact, neither
4.2 to 5.0 nor 5.0 to 5.1 were "simple" upgrades.
You can configure 5.1 to use the 4.2 units of measure, but that's
not likely to affect your problem.
I understand what you say is happening, but I'm having trouble when
it comes to figuring out why it's happening. Are you defining your
columns for one page size then choosing another, narrower one? A
column definition is set for the size of the paper being used when
it's created and doesn't "self-adjust" if the paper size is changed.
For example, I just chose an 11x8.5 wide paper, created a pair of
columns, then reverted it back to 8.5x11 standard. The left column
was still its full width, while the right one got compressed. The
solution would've been to place a column definition for the narrow
sheet ahead of that for the wide sheet then delete that for the wide
sheet (using reveal codes to see what you're doing).
