Hard drives are now using what the manufacturers call a "liquid
bearing"... and they are MUCH quieter than the old hard drives.

31-32dB has dropped to 21dB or so... and since that's a log scale,
that's 1/10th the noise.

I certainly don't miss the whine of the old hard drives, given that I
used to have one box with FOURTEEN attached on Promise controllers.

Don't know of any liquid-bearing case fans (as yet), but the Vantec
Stealth fans are rated at 21dB, and compared to a 40-50dB case fan from
other manufacturers, well worth the small cost.

The Stealth 8025L has been a standard for me for several years now...
but I routinely replace the fans in Antec cases with the SF12025L 120mm
fan, and those in the Supermicro CSE-M35T 5-bay SATA hot-swap RAID
array cages with the SF9225L 92mm unit.

(anyone want a bunch of noisy case fans, cheap? :) )

(was this about OS/2 at some point? :) )
