Bullshit!

The voice lines supplied by Telstra are supposed to offer a bandwidth
(forgotten, over 3kHz I think) which does allow for 33600 connects. Other
matters stuff it up (line noise etc).

Some telephone lines cannot support 33600 - while others most certainly do.

Up until a couple of months ago, almost ALL of my connects to my mail host
were 33600. I just checked this week's logs. All of the connects were
31200 which later upshifted to 33600 (going by the better than 120%
transfer rates).

One of my points spends time in Mossman FNQ each year. Last year most of
his connects were 33600 from Mossman (2000km odd). He is heading off again
in a week or so. It will be interesting to see what this years figures a
like.
