War of the Worlds - the original, not any bastardised movies - is
interesting not for what it predicts but for what it misses.  The aliens
have a Heat-Ray and a mysterious black suffocating cloud that contains a
hitherto unknown element, plus mechanical robot bodies. And nothing else,
apart from interplanetary travel.  No lasers.  No wireless communication. 
No hyperdrive.  No other cliches that we're so fond of.

If something written in 1898 couldn't anticipate all the technological
marvels we take for granted, what will we see in the 22nd century that a
book written in 1998 couldn't forsee?
