Well, if you would like an exceptional case, then I have a Siemens
486DX2 laptop that was operated nearly continuously for a few years as a
part of metering/data acquisition system. Not a true industrial PC, it
has the strenghts of fanless design and clever protection against
ingress of dust. Not very useful in 2006 but still works under heavily
customized OS/2 (to ensure we aren't going OT...)
So the question remains how much processing power could be delivered by
today's technology in a fanless desktop-sized machine that achieves
comparable reliability and "fits the bill".
