He said "Ammonia" not "absorption"   Many Ice plants used ammonia as a
refrigerant and some had some MONSTER compressors. Up to about an 8"X8"
Bore/stroke and bigger.  They all stink a little due to minute amounts
of ammonia escaping via the crankshaft seals.  You can probably smell
about one part per milliom, but it's not dangerous at such levels.
At higher concentrations you'll never take the SECOND breath!
