Well, Prog vs. Jazz vs. Pop is pretty easy. Wether a band is prog or
jazz largely depends on their influences and what they consider
themselves. Do they have a Rock background or a Jazz background? And
pop, that's flavored carbonated water.
MR> Anyway, Renaissance often played extended instrumental pieces, working

Ah, a true fan, you are. My apologoies. I defer to your much more
detailed study of the band; I know them only a little, from casual
listening back in "the day."
MR> That sounds to me like at least part of what defines Prog-rock,
MR> as I understand it. So, in your opinion, are Renaissance `on the very

Maybe so. But (in my defn.) there is also the obligatory "tearin' up
your axe" requirement to be prog-rock at some point (Palmer banging
gongs, Emerson, well, he's a case all by himself; Steve Howe lettin'
loose, King Crimson takin' off, Gentle Giant rockin' out, etc.). I never
heard Ren. let go, but then again, I haven't studied them as you most
definitely have, so you probably have some good examples for me, eh?
Besides, that's only my own personal criteria, not to be confused with
reality. But to me, if this element is lacking, it's "New Age", which
is not necessarilly a bad thing - take Vangelis for instance. Is he prog
or what? He's damn good, anyway, but so laid back, which again, is not
a bad thing, but more of a "New Age" thing. And Kitaro - Definitely New
Age. What would one call 70's Tomita? New age was as yet uncoined, but
the dude didn't rock, and yet he fits in a closely related area, like
Walter/Wendy Carlos...........but I ramble. I guess they are just
"electronic music" when such is the case.
How about this "Phish" band? I just don't see why they are considered
prog. Am I missing something? Echolyn, them I get.
I just got that "History of Prog" 5 CD set from Collectors Choice (they
were $30 cheaper than Rhino-direct, counting my $10 coupon) delivered to
my door, haven't even opened it yet, It has one tune by Ren. on it -
"Kings & Queens." I think I'll go have a listen. Dang, it looks like
I'm going to blow my mind all over again with this dang(dad-burnit) set.
Groovy. Picture the..............
