When Brian Hooker translated "Cyrano de Bergerac", he did some of
that, substituting a reference to Lancelot for some knight more familiar to
French audiences, and such.

As for laugh tracks, well, I sit here in the next room while my wife
watches sit-coms; all I hear are the laugh tracks.  It is rather pathetic. 
But of course, for British jokes we need a laugh track so we know it *was*
a joke
