GP~I used to use Dial Up Accellerator Plus (DAP) to almost quadruple my
~download speeds, as well as giving me the capability to interrupt
~downloads and continue them later --
~I have the freeware edition of DAP 5.0 -- if you want it, email me at
~gpope{at}shaw.ca :)
Thankyou, I do appreciate the offer...
(And I always like to hear about potential new goodies) But.. B)
A couple of things..
First - the ability of a Download 'accellerator' to actually accellerate
is determined solely by bandwidth available. If you are only using
part of your bandwidth they will help some, but if you are using all
that is available to you then splitting the file into 4 pieces will
bring you 4 feeds at 1/4 the speed each. So it ends up no faster than
a single feed. Since the bottleneck in my download is actually my
Hookup speed, nothing will help much if the sending end is running at
my full hookup speed or better..
Second.. that said.. I do use another Download Accellerator/manager
that works in exactly the same way but I use it mainly for the
'continue interrupted download' function and the more aggressive
'polling' it uses to get new packets sent if things do slow down a
bit at the sending end. (It also splits the file into up to 8 parts
and I keep it set at 4 parts for any minor improvement that gives.)
I stopped using DAP a couple of years ago after rumours of
it being rampant spyware - if 'rumours' is the right word..
My Spyware checker freaked and insisted on uninstalling it.. B)
