Hopefully we will be smart  enough to make sure that it always remains that
way as  well.  Even if that means using them again.  Preferably low yield
tactical nukes for busting bunkers, deposing lunatics, and depriving
nuclear capabilities to the tin pot dictators of the world.

The other option is to just make sure every country everywhere has nukes.
Then the few idiots in the world won't think of using theirs because they
will face massive retaliation from every other country in the world.

It could be that if we don't stop Iran and North Korea et al from nukes
that the safest course is to follow what we now know from gun control. 
More guns
= less crime.  More nukes = less likely power crazed nuke holders from
acting.

Iran wouldn't be able to blackmail anyone if everyone around them from
Estonia to Israel to Japan to you name it all had their own nukes.
