Do you mean the Tasmanian lad whose father wore a Scottish kilt to 
the wedding ?

I suspect he did - it seems he left HMS Endeavour safely anchored 
and took the ship's pinnance rowing among the island until he 
located a suitable peak;  on top of that hill modern authorities 
have planted a bronze plaque commemorating the discovery of Cook 
Straits from that spot by the doughty explorer...

 The original speeling here was "Nieeuw Zeeland",  so you're right
