When I was a kid the melting pot theory of immigration was taught  in
public grade schools as a great thing and our country's strength.  Now they
teach whitey is the devil and USA Whitey's are the worst of all and one
should never assimilate because it only helps whitey.

Well maybe I exaggerate a little, but not as much as one might think sadly.
