Once apon a time Bill Grimsley said, 'Re: Specifics on modem retraining' to
Simon Byrnand...

BG> Oddly enough, the "Fallback Disabled" mentioned in the Sportster's

Ok, well I can put the Fallback reading well and truely into the "who
cares"

bin :-)

BG> That problem generally only shows up during interactive (i.e.
"chat")

So far I cant say I have noticed it in interactive mode either, as well as

Internet, I do a fair bit of BBS work with it, (I dial into the BBS I run

to get my mail, as it doesnt run from home) and it hasnt played up, so

maybe I'm one of the lucky ones :-) In fact I cant really fault it,

considering all the criticisim I've heard about them....

SB> Is it possible this specimen has later version firmware that fixes the

BG> Looks like the affected series to me, although due to the specific

BG> nature of the problem, some people may never see it at all. USR

BG> recommend the use of S12=0 as a quick fix, although what the escape

BG> code guard time has to do with BTLZ is completely beyond me.

I cant see any correlation either, I havn't bothered to fiddle with S12.

BG> DL the text-based Sportster and Courier technical manuals from

BG> www.usr.com, and all will be revealed (the Courier manual is far more

BG> descriptive). If you need to know more than that, link into the

BG> USR_Modems echo and simply ask.

Ok, thanks for that, I downloaded both the Sportster and Courier manuals

in Word format, they are a lot better than the one I have. They are still

both extremely coy about saying anything about ATI11 however, the Sportster

manual doesnt even list it as a valid command, while the Courier manual just

says its for diagnostic purposes "if a USR technician asks you to read out

the results". Gee thanks....;-)

Simon
