Many are labelled as some variation of "quiet/silent
technology" since this is a bit of a buzzword lately and actually a
legitimate concern since some systems do indeed sound like a 747 winding
up. While I have had some luck with cheapo generics, I have also had some
stinkers, since I build and repair systems and go through a lot of PSUs. I
have always been pleased with top brand names like Antec, Enermax,
CoolerMaster, Thermaltake and especially PC Power&Cooling who afaik was
the very first to offer "silent technology" models over 15 years
ago. They are however expensive initially but since BTX looks like a no-go
(Intel has all but abandoned it by droppping Prescott and AMD never needed
it) it is likely that an ATX PSU will be usefull for a good 5-10 years as
long as it has "SATA ready" connections. There is considerable
value in knowing that a PSU simply can *not* be the problem in any system
you put it and parsing the cost over lifespan can make PC P&C a
worthwhile investment

*especially* if quiet is premium as well as performance. However Antec has
recently waltzed heavily into PC P&C's territory at considerable
savings. In most electronics the PSU is the single most important
component so weigh that in when you decide how much your data and your
sanity is worth, not to mention your peace of mind.

Please take no offense. I only meant why was it worthy of so much concern
and time spent. You have answered that here. To me, I might seek out a
fanless PSU of excellent quality, because it has been designed to be very
efficient, and then put a fan in it to make it *really* cool. Hehehe
