RM> Since the bottleneck in my download is actually my RM> Hookup speed, nothing will help much if the sending end is running at RM> my full hookup speed or better.. GP~I thought the theory was that your computer is part of a "system" and as ~with local systems, the internet will allocate resources based on demand ~(ie. when your printer is doing a heavy job, the CPU will give more ~ticks to it, and on the net, when one node is demanding more, it'll get ~more, so at least you'll come closer to your modem's max (esp. on a wide ~bandwidth connection); but the best is that when there are slowdowns ~between you and the sending server, DAP will reroute your packets by ~using different/faster servers to receive from. . . All true.. but if your hookup is running at its full bandwidth sending more to you faster won't help because the pipe will only hold so much water.. B) RM> I stopped using DAP a couple of years ago after rumours of RM> it being rampant spyware - if 'rumours' is the right word.. RM> My Spyware checker freaked and insisted on uninstalling it.. B) GP~Maybe it is spyware, most freeware is these days! :( But that might ~just be the new (version 5.0) one, cuz I think 4.0 was all right (& ~worked just fine!) There's one called Fresh DL - www.freshdevices.com - that is free and is not spyware or adware and works almost the same. It's only drawback is that it won't take the same file from several different servers at the same time. It will take up to 8 feeds from the Same site to help speed things up and it works well for restarts too. I've used it for a couple of years now - through several updates - and it's a fairly nice program. They have several other free programs there too. A Tweaker and a Benchmark and a brand new and pretty flashy graphic/audio viewer/player program. If there's a catch, it's that you have to register to get a serial number for their programs but the only thing they do with your E-Mail address is send you notices when the next updates to their free programs come out and you can unsubscribe at any time. They DO have some small ads for other commercial software on their site while you are downloading (and in their upgrade notice notes) which is probably how they actually pay the bills but it's not a painful experience. Generally their software works well and is very high quality for Freeware. GP~I tend to not upgrade unless there's something I *REALLY* need in the ~new version AND there's already a reputation of reliability for the new ~version. . . :) Been there... Upgraded to a worse program and had to go back to the old one until a better upgrade comes out. Irfan-View, another Wonderful freeware program, had the odd glitchy upgrade but its been constantly improved and its utility added to over the years until I wouldn't be without it. (Windows 32 bit only I think). I've deleted about 75 meg of graphics software and replaced it with I-View's 1 to 4 meg of software depending on the (also free) plugins you add. Basically it's a graphics viewer, converter, cropper, enhancer better than most photo-imaging software out there plus it can access most audio files as well. My scanner feeds directly into I-View. I dumped Xerox Photo-Impact software for scanner use.. (Feel like leaving the room for a beer yet ?) B) GP~You'd be surprised how often the new upgrade does nothing more than nag ~you more for money(with shareware) or downgrade performance, as ~incentive to get you to get their "professional" version! :| Yes.. As with "GetRight" download manager... It's 'fall' was the reason I first went to DAP, which I liked well enough until they got into the spyware business. --- * SLMR Rob * ... but at least I got custody of the modem ! * * PDQWK 2.52 #17 --- GTMail 1.26* Origin: Kentucky's Capitol City Online * 502/875-8938 (1:2320/105.0) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 2320/105 261/38 123/500 106/2000 633/267 |
