Hi JAMES!
On 09-0296 @ 10:13, JAMES HILL said to SIEGFRIED ZUHR:
JH> SZ> Acad files that are damaged by the attack of a series of
JH> SZ> cross-links. The files are readable by DOS but Acad refuges
JH> SZ> them.
JH> Try copying the file from DOS to a new name say: Copy FILE.DWG
JH>FILEBAK.DWG, Load AutoCad and see if it works without too much loss.
JH>If that works your done. However if the file will not copy because of
JH>the crossed-links then you will need to run NDD from Norton or if you
JH>have DOS 6.22 you can run SCANDISK and it will remove the cross-links
JH>but sometimes you lose a lot of your file or AutoCad may still refuse
JH>to load it.
Very good advice, James. Siegfried should be able to recover (as you stated)
some if not all of the info. in his Acad files in question.
JH>On all our AutoCad machines or any High end CAD, DTP or
JH>ArcView stations we always add these two or three lines to the begining
JH>of the autoexec.bat file. c:\dos\scandisk /all /autofix /nosave
JH>/nosummary c:\dos\defrag c: /f /h /sn c:\dos\........
I would be leary of suggesting that someone, without an understanding of what
each switch meant, implement the exact commands as stated above. Although
those are the same parameters that I use, It would still seem prudent to have
a person understand exactly how scandisk handles things. I have only had one
instance that Scandisk (MS-Dos) ever created a "glitch" in a system, and
since it was not my machine, I thankfully created an "Undo" disk. Once I ran
"Undo" everything was back to normal. As I said before, that was only *one*
in hundreds...
JH>drives I have listed. This runs everytime you REBOOT or everytime you
JH>turn on your machine. Somedays it can take a few minutes so we just
JH>grab our coffee while we wait for boot up. This has saved us losing
JH>data in the last 2 years. We have not lost a .DWG file and the
JH>machines seem to run faster. Enjoy.
Good job, James. We all need a couple extra minutes here and there!
Similar to yourself, I run a batch file called "Friday", that runs a virsus
scan, Scandisk, and Speedisk (Norton's version of Defrag). I also tend to
Speedisk a couple few times a week when the mood strikes me. I also run a
nightly back-up (full on Wednesday's and Saturdays). Fortunately, I can put
myself in the same boat as you - in not losing a file in quite some time.
Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more of your messages in
the future. TTYL
