Hello Roy -

RJT>> Macros are something I've done very little with. What
RJT>> sort of stuff do you do with them that's useful?

CA>> Eliminating double spaces, eliminating double blank lines,
CA>> reformatting text to a fixed line length while preserving
CA>> the FIDO "quote" markings,

RJT> Now _that_ one I'd like to see...

Would require version 3 of Qedit. The combined macros are too
large for earlier versions.

--8<--cut

RJT>> I've also been fiddling with copies of web pages here,
RJT>> and had the misfortune to acquire a few that were
RJT>> apparently done with word. I've decided that it's the
RJT>> worst possible tool there is for web pages, at least in
RJT>> terms of what I've encountered so far! :-)

CA>> I have a DOS filter that will removed most, if not all,
CA>> non-ASCII characters and then I reformat the text. :-)

RJT> There's no non-ascii in there,

If it was an MSWord 'doc' file it would have non-ascii data
included within the file for page setup, fonts, etc.

RJT> but the whole bloody file is all one "line", for starters.
RJT> I see (in mcedit) "^M" in lots of random places, and
RJT> should probably figure out how to use tr to change those
RJT> to space. I'm seeing stuff like: nonsense.

Write something to replace those with LFs and you should be in
good shape with *nix editors. :-)

RJT> Then there's the way that some web authoring tools (?)
RJT> seem to want to tell the browser what font size and face
RJT> to use, over and over again, even if it's all the same.

That's a tricky bit there. I've gotten lazy since using
DreamWeaver here but certain HTML tags won't allow just one
font declaration to include all of the text. I recall something
about 'block markers' as opposed to other types of markers.

RJT> I snag stuff here to keep local copies for reference, and
RJT> some which were 90-105K are now down to 15-18K after I'm
RJT> done cutting all the crap out!

DreamWeaver will 'clean up' HTML and remove redundant tags for
me automatically.

RJT> It ain't just OS and application software that m$ is
RJT> bloating, apparently that extends to web pages as well.

MSWord would be a poor choice for creating webpages but what
you describe doesn't sound like MSW files to me if there aren't
any of the added page setup or other info in there.
