I don't have enough details to know what is happening
to your WP 5.1 columns. In a document with 1" left and
right margins, if I press Alt-F7, 1 (columns), 3 (define),
then select Newspaper type, and number of columns 2, I
get default column spacing like this:
     Column     Left     Right
       1:        1         4
       2:        4.5       7.5
What do you get at that screen? Also, please press the
help key and see what date is in the upper right corner?
Mine says, 08/20/90.
