Not sure I understand the connection (do you think old school initially
exaggerates? or simply prefers conservative numbers in calculations vs
reports?) but OK.

If it truly is 53C at idle that's not unusual for a Prescott core P4, but
it is still high in my book. It will certainly hit 65C under heavy
workload or warmer days.

Whew! You're tellin' me!?! Actually it's a wonder we get anything near
usefull data on voltage and temps since it all depends on solid state
sensors that aren't exactly miniature VTVM's... they're a tad funky to say
the least. Also where they are located and how they gather data among many
other variables (even worse in temps) affects the accuracy of the data. I
tend to trust the bios data when it regards anything located directly on
the mobo. I would think they calibrate at the very least during the design
phase. Programs, like David Wu's for OS/2, must be calibrated to interpret
data from many different kinds of sensors so they need adjusting on every
system. That's why all such proggys come with "trim tabs". I
adjust mine as close to what bios reports as possible under similar
conditions.
