NH> I've been battling those two things since I first got Linux.
The first thing to ask yourself is...
Is it their already?
EMacs has a variety of TAB settings and screen sizes in each of its
various "MODE" settings. The TAB Ruler and Screen that you desire
migth already be built into one of EMacs standard MODEs. Then it is a
simple matter of changing editting modes.
Assuming the TAB and Screen Settings of your dreams are not present, the
second thing to ask is....
Are you using all "OS standard" built-in components?
For example, VMS DCL EMacs needs an adjunct TERMCAP dictionary and a
terminal type 'FOREIGN' declaration if you are to be using EMacs on any
terminal that is not a D.E.C. standard terminal.
A third question that you need to ask yourself is what scope do you want
these TAB and Screen declarations to have....
The TABs and screen lines can be declared in four or more places.
o The hardware tabstops... if you are not using a GUI terminal.
o The TERMCAP/TERMINFO declaration.
o The X-TERM declaration.
o The editor initialization startup profile.
The last time that I used a custom arrangement was when I was doing some
introduction to FORTH programming around 1985. C-Mode, Text, and Info,
are the three modes that I commonly use. Let me dig out my yellowed
manuals and see what I can come up with. As I recall, it was not
particularly difficult.... I am not particularly a GUI person.
May I ask: What are you trying to do? Can you read e-LISP?
Could TERMCAP and X-TERM be resetting your tabs when you drop
into a shell (i.e. an inheritance problem)?
P.S. I'll dig out my manuals and get back to you. Unfortunately, I
have "manual" memory. "Info TABs" should say something.... If I
remember correctly, there are three TAB screens? Are you trying to
create a new editting EMacs MODE (i.e. rigorous margin rules et
cetera?) or do you just want to move the TABS and resize the
Screen on a document by document basis?
