This is a little off-topic, but if he releases code and puts a
copyright notice in it - he DOES retain the copyright. It is
illegal for you to change anything about it - even just the
copyright notice. There are civil legal penalties for violating
the copyright law. Furthermore, you are subject to CRIMINAL
prosecution if you _knowingly_ violate someone's copyright.
