SUBJECT:Sportster Update Information N
Update Information
_______________
Information on the "Pause" Issue:
We've received reports from owners of Sportster V.34 modems manufactured
after March, 1996 concerning an intermittent timing condition that occurs
when the modems are being used in a terminal data transmission mode. Our
testing indicates this is a fairly isolated occurrence.
The condition appears to occur only when the modems are being used to
interactively transmit text typed from the keyboard (such as chatting). The
modem may pause during this type of data transmission. Standard data
transfers, using common transfer protocols such as Zmodem, FTP, and HTTP are
not affected.
Our engineers have isolated the condition and determined a software
resolution. We've created an exchange program and chip replacement program
that will resolve the problem for those Sportster owners who experience it.
Products which we have an update for:
We currently have updates for almost all products affected by this issue. The
only product which we do not have an update or replacement plan for is the
model 1141 (Sportster Voice for Macintosh) modem. U.S. Robotics is putting
forth a priority effort toward a resolution for this model modem. As soon
the update is available for this product, we will be informing our customer
base.
Current Work Around and Update Procedure:
To resolve this problem you may try setting S12=0. If you still experience
the problem fill out the SRO request form below to determine if you will
receive a chip update or establish a product swap. Product swaps will be
reshipped within 24 hours utilizing 2-day shipping.

Code Date Information:
The following chart is a listing of current Supervisor or EPROM dates for our
modems. The chart includes the model number, short description, and the
current supervisor or EPROM date of your modem. The Supervisor or EPROM Date
can be obtained by typing an ATI7 while in terminal mode of a
communications program. ( Examples of programs which have a terminal mode
are QuickLink, Qmodem, Telix, Windows Terminal, and ProComm Plus ) A sample
output is shown below.

The Serial Number can be found on the bottom of the bar code label. The
number is generally 16 digits and starts with 000.
(Ex:0008390012345678). The bar code label is available in 2 places. The first
location is on the end flap of the modem box. The second location depends on
whether you have an internal or external modem. If the modem is internal the
barcode will be on the printed circuit board. If the modem is external the
barcode will be on the bottom of the modem. The 7 digit hyphenated number is
NOT the serial number. Example: CJE-0268 is NOT the serial number.
