-> WC> It'll fly when I add 128 or 256 Meg of RAM in Linux. -> WC> It already boots Knoppix and recognizes all hardware -> WC> with just 128 Meg of RAM. -> WC> It appears to be a server class machine and very generic -> WC> in setup with little to no proprietary crap. -> Gateways are good but do have some proprietary crap, although less so then -> other server boards such as HP which are usually chock full o' proprietary -> crap. However some of it isn't crap but sometimes it is hard to know that -> without proper documentation of the proprietary crap. Well the (onboard) sound card driver loaded as did the separate AGP video card. I've got *two* UARTs with DB-9 serial ports, a first for me. The 128 Meg 168 pin DIMM is listed as Samsung PC100-322-620 but no idea if it's ECC, buffered or unbuffered. I think I'll take a chance and grab an unbuffed 128 Meg DIMM and have a go with it. -> WC> I'm exceedingly happy to have it and it works quite well. -> The one I worked on was nice. I wouldn't turn it out to the cold. I've got a tiny drive in it with a just large enough Linux partition to save the Knoppix configeration file to recall on boot to live CD with knoppix myconfig=/dev/hda3. I'll add the swap file (hda2) in the next day or two. -> WC> When fully upgraded with RAM and new hard drive it'll -> WC> suit ALL my needs for the next few years. -> :::knock on wood::: -> Definetly a good deal and worth any effort on your part. Hey it's got a 3COM network card that's recognized as well. Hey the price was right Next time I'm out that way I just need a DB-25 - DB-9 cable for the 28800 spare modem for two systems ready to go online. The 486 is history, I cannibalized it today but stored the remaining parts away, in the Pentium III or in the closet. --- Platinum Xpress/Win/WINServer v3.0pr5* Origin: Try Our Web Based QWK: DOCSPLACE.ORG (1:123/140) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 123/140 500 106/2000 633/267 |
