subject: modems for a BBS

Hi Glen,

GC> I'm not rich :) So I can't go out and get top of the range, what I'm
GC> after is modems around $200-$300 (or less). 33600
GC> And from the advice from other sysops, I should only get External.

Yes, external is HEAPS better, you can see what's going on.

GC> What I'd like to know is, can anyone recommend good modems around that
GC> price, that would suit my needs.... I have the prices of plenty of
GC> modems ranging from $155 up to $999, but I would really have a clue how
GC> they actually perform... The KTX brand seems to be the cheapest
GC> starting at around $155, then the dynalink, lightspeed etc.

Arrrgghhh. My friend just got a KTX 33.6, it's a real arse. Whether it effects
you or not is a different matter altogether. The mention of "Full Hayes AT
command set" is complete bull. AT+MS modulation didn't work, the NVRAM listing
command doesn't work. Can't even set it in the synchronization! I had to
write him a string so we could play Doom because NONE of the ones in the game
worked. It wouldn't negotiate a carrier properly to a BBS I always connect to
flawlessly with my Roadster, yes it's me, hi Glen, bad luck about the Roadster
:-(
It's a 33.6 model, the BBS we connected to failed to connect the first time,
and when it did second time around it connected at 28.8K. Maybe lines are bad.
ATI0 reported 336, ATI4 reported Rockwell RC288DPi. What did your Roadster 33.6
report for these commands as a matter of interest?
So, I'm unimpressed with the KTX. It was ten times more problem than the
Roadster ever was, and when he connected to mine it dropped from 3300cps to
2650cps on a 28.8K connect, and we are just 900 metres away from each other
with the terminal in between, so I cannot recommend a KTX to you.
I've heard that the Lightspeeds are pretty good but haven't seen one running
to give you a positive answer, and people were complaining about the
Dynalink 33.6K model having error correction or compression problems.

GC> Are any of those cheaply priced modems any good? I payed over $300 for
GC> a Netcomm Roadster about 10 months ago, and thats had non stop

Did you keep the Roadster Glen?

GC> problems... And now I see all teh modem reviews paying that modem out
GC> big time... Most users connect at 24000 with that modem... rarely 28.8k

Oh, you got it to answer did you? Did you try connecting to other BBS's or
was that when you got only 24000? I'm still getting 90% 28.8K with 3300cps and
about 8% 26400 with 3000cps, 2% covers anything lower. It doesn't drop out
anymore or very rarely, I've got around that problem. I could suggest a Netcomm
Voicemaster (another Netcomm, maybe you hate Netcomm now?) you could get
a US Robotics Sportster or a US Robotics Courier ;-)

GC> and never 33.6k :( So don't bother recommending that modem to me :)

Yeah, I'll give up on that modem for you and BBS use :-)

Regards,
Alex
