I have a gps reciever here that could be wired out to two serial ports to
handle all IO between the computer and it.  Can be set to either 4800 or
9600 baud and if binary IO then only 9600 baud is doable.  I know the
sawmills around here are still using 8-bit serial to handle automation and
the equipment is worth a small fortune.  Tell them that serial programming
is out of fashion.
