| subject: | Consistent connects with cheapie modems |
Hi all, I have a couple of Artnet 28.8k modems which cost $165 and $159 respectively -- purchased a month or two apart, but they are identical. I've never had any problems getting consistent outbound 28800 connects with these cheapies. A friend was having a lot of problems with an Avtek 14.4k, and a SimpleModem 28.8k; he has a full time internet link, and he was lucky to have his connection stay up more than a few hours at a time. The SimpleModem never connected at 28800. I lent him my Artnet cheapie, and he had a lot of success with it, connect times of over 24 hours. (Incidentally when I borrowed his SimpleModem for a few days, it connected at 28800 every time, and stayed up over 2 days at a time). He's now settled on a Swann modem, I think. Just goes to show that sometimes the cheapies can work just as well. :-) As soon as I get myself a spare 16550 serial card, I will be putting one of the Artnets on my BBS line, to give it a real workout. Currently I have a 14.4k internal (also a no name which has been very reliable) on that line. BTW, I now have a USR Sportster too, and I get consistent 33600 connects with that to my upstream internet provider every single time. I'm interested in the wide variation of success that people have had with higher speed connects, such as 28800 or 33600. I'm in an inner city suburb, about 4km north of Melbourne city, and the exchange is about 1km away. Cheers. PS. Does anyone know how to get the USR Sportster to recognise Australian busy, and not detect Australian ring as busy? :-( ---* Origin: Sensation: Melbourne AUSTRALIA.
