well, these modems are extremely susceptible to line noise and
interference caused by everything from wet to poorly installed phone
lines. 56K modems achieve their potentially impressive downstream
speed - the speed at which web pages and d/l files come TO you - only
when data is sent from an ISP or online service connected to the
phone compnay via all-digital lines, which are typically less prone to
noise and interference than analog lines. Theoretically, with only
one analog link in the chain - usually at the wire that actually
reaches your house - therefore only one digital-to-analog conversion,
transmission speed can reach the 50Kbps range...in theory. Also there
is 2 different technology chips for 56K modems; x2 from USR and K56flex
from Rockwell and Lucent. Your Motorola ModemSURFR 56K uses K56flex
technology. To reach speeds faster than 33.6Kbps, the modems on each
end of the connnection - your end and your ISP's - must not only be 56K
models, but must use the SAME technology, in your case the modem that
you are connecting to must also use the K56flex technology as well as
being a 56K modem to reach 33.6Kbps+ speeds. The SURFR is supposedly
the best modem in its class as far as upgrades and software bundle goes
but the average and top throughput speeds are only 29.5 and 30.2,
respectively. I personally would of waited until the FCC determines
the 56K standard in 1998 and the modems become more reliable in their
speed. I think that the technology was crudely and hastily produced
or
the 56K modems for the public that there are still a few bugs.
