Hello Jack
It depends on what you can use and what you wish to spend. Firstly, I
thought you were looking at the PX 740 but can certainly understand why the
PX-716 might sway you with features. However the 740 is cheaper. I don't
know about it's sub-models though. The 716 however has several and prices
vary considerably due to discounts likkely because of popularity. SATA,
the SA sub-model usually has greater discounts than most PATA models. But,
the SATA slot-loader has the greatest discounts but starts out higher so
net cost is pretty close to tray-loader. I don't know if a PATA
slot-loader exists but searching Plextor's site should reveal that and
searching Froogle, Pricegrabber, Pricewatch, et al, should find the best
prices currently available. I don't know what to say about "factory
reconditioned" because one never knows exactly what that means. It
can simply mean "returned", even "returned unopened".
It is a gamble in any case but online stores of any caliber have really
good r
eturn policies. I was shocked to get a no-contest, very pleasant, full
refund on a bad returned one from Overstock.com. YMMV.
