If you're looking for a ceremony for 'disposing' of a worn-out us
FLAGS, CALL:
National Flag Foundation
(800) 615-1776
or write:
National Flag Foundation
Flag Plaza
Pittsburgh, PA 15219-3630
Ask them to send you their "National Flag Facts # 2"
They also have the following phamplets available:
# 10 - About the National Flag Foundation
# 15 - the Flag At Half Staff -- Mourning
# 16 - Displaying the Flag on a Movable Object:
Uniforms and Vehicles
# 17 - Display of the Flag in a Church or Public Auditorium
# 18 - Flag Folding
# 19 - Illumination of the US Flag for Display After Sunset
Obviously, as Scouts and Scouters, we probably know the contents of
these publications. However, after obrtaining them, I found some
interesting thingsa I didn't know (and I have studied the US flag and
it's intriguing history).
Also, you may want to consider joing the NFF. It's only $17.76 per
year which entitles you to receive their quarterly publication "the
Standard Bearer." This quarter's issue contains the foloowing
articles:
(Cover) Admiral Robert E. Peary and the "North Pole Flag"
Opinions and Observations - A Few Minutes With Andy Rooney
Flag Facts - Illuminating the Flag
Star-Spangled Stories - Jeffrey St. John
Flags of America (Alamo, Lord Baltimore, and Guilford Courthouse)
(pictures and descriptions)
NFF Special Feature - Marquis de Lafayette and A Flag That Never
Comes Down
Ask NFF! - Interesting and Unusual Flag Questions
(this quarter's question: What is the 'Flag Code')
NFF's Three-Month Flag Calendar - Important Dates in Flag History
It is interesting to note that the NFF has a "Flag Plaza - Scout
Center' at their headquarters in Pittsburgh. It is a "gift to this
and future generations of American Youth."
