No, you are not a spear carrier. As a director you are a leader; as a member, 
I
am a spear carrier.
I agree, Directors, either in the NRA or in the business world, should not 
micro manage the paid staff. However, they should set a direction and limits.
Then they should review performance and either restate direction or make 
taff
changes if necessary. You are there to supervise the Officers of the 
Organization, for the membership, not to be a "spear carrier" or rubber 
tamp.
And this is a good thing. It can give the officers another view of a problem
and, at times, suggest different approaches to solving a problem.
So much for the Philosophy of Corporate/Organization Management. :-)

Glad to hear you are keeping an eye on the bottom line; that is one
of a Director's duties. I want to see the NRA continue for many, many years
to come. It is people like you who will insure that it does. Thank you
for doing that tough job.
