subject: modems for a BBS

GW> Just a note, I bought a Spirit 33DL (whitebox) modem from Harvey Norman
GW> prior to Christmas (23.12.96) for $199. EXCELLENT modem so far (knock on
GW> wood), 2 year warranty.

GW> These modem were left over from being sold as a set with a computer and
GW> Harvey Norman bought a shipment, it maybe hard to track them down, but if
GW> you ring Mike Boorne Electronics (the distributors of the spirt modem)
GW> they'll tell you what is going on and which stores have them. The Spirit
GW> 336DL is the same modem as the Spirit Dragon (different case {Whitebox}).

Seen. It isn't the same as the Dragon - but near enough. Bit smaller
housing, runs a tad hotter, has voicemail which the Dragon doesn't. Has a
multi-window front panel instead of the smoked plastic effect the Dragon
has. My impression is that it's a downmarket attempt, recycling the
existing design.

Performance excellent. Wet finger guess is that it's the same circuitry as
the Dragon - it does deal with my cruddo line in the same way - ie holds
when lesser modems won't. Once again, seriously competitive with a USR
Courier, much as it pains me to admit it.

Currently in stock at Chatswood Harvey Norman, on a "Spirit"
modem display at the other end of the store from the high price modems.
The full Spirit range was available - about 20 or so of the 336DL's in
evidence.

Confirm - price $199. Bought one for a mate, and tested it before handing on.

Recommended. Keep it cool if it's for BBS use.

Regards,
Dave Hatch.
