ZR> Work he
ZR> thinks up himself is much, much better because it interests him and he
ZR> puts his natural enthusiasm into it.
ZR> Today he found an old tea kettle in one of my bottom cupboards. This
ZR> inspired him to hold a contest for the containers in my home. Right
ZR> now the two tea kettles, the coffee pot, the blender, and a few other
ZR> pitchers and such are on the two tables in my living room lined up for
ZR> the contest. He cut out tags and wrote numbers on each, using the
ZR> flashcards I'd made for examples of number shapes. He remembered from
ZR> the car show that we attended last April that the contest entries
ZR> would need numbers. I counted this all as an hour long math project.
ZR> Even though today is Sunday, it will be written down and will sure take
ZR> the burden off me later in the week, since he does have to have 3 + 1/2
ZR> hours of math each week.
This is SO neat! My eldest son does this, holds 'contests' and
has already organized all of his books into a 'library' several times
over, etc. When my eldest was younger, she arranged everything she
owned into groups and even the youngest seems caught up in these
organizational games. Too bad THEY can't teach Mommy a thing or
two... (g)!
You know, I never even thought of the above as 'learning'... Pretty
sharp stuff!
ZR> To me, this is what homeschooling is... encouraging creativity and
ZR> teaching (or allowing) the children to learn to love learning. :)
EXACTLY!!! :)
