I've used pretty much every BBS package out there in the course of 12
years, from Wildcat to AdeptX to RoboBoard (cool software) to SearchLight
(even more cool software), to TBBS (the grandaddy of cool), and Renegade
has always been something I always ended up reverting back to... although I
did stick with TBBS for a few years. Only reason I went back to Renegade is
because I could never get door games to work properly because TBBS was its
own built-in "multi-tasker" (and a precursor to all this
ISP-in-a-box trend with Synchronet, Wildcat, etc etc).

I can easily add native Renegade tossing support to D'Bridge so that the RG
community is not stuck having to use Gecho or FrontDoor, both of which are
shareware (last I checked). D'Bridge is freeware and is both a mailer and
tosser combined. I also wrote an MBASES.DAT hook so RG Sysops no longer
have to maintain their message forums at all if they don't want to.

But what stops me is just the attitude of the current RG developer (at the
risk of starting a flame thread), and quite frankly, I'm just trying to
contribute to the hobby. Laughing at another Sysop for carrying
RadioShack/Tandy files is uncalled for; hey I still own a Tandy 1000.
Laughing at someone for merely mentioning the name NetFossil is also
uncalled for. If thats the maturity of the current RG developer, no thanks.

I guess the whole issue with the thread was that its real easy for a
programmer to get himself caught up in the moment with whatever hes working
on, and easily become blind to the fact that not everyone is going to use
his work or his programs. I have less than a dozen "dedicated"
D'Bridge users but my girlfriend and I make it a point to personally answer
each and every email we get. And I personally value all praise/criticism I
get (and believe me I get a LOT of "can you add this?" type of
mail).

... but, thats what makes the hobby so fun, when you develop a program that
makes someone happy. Then its worth it. But when it gets to your head, its
time to take a break. I'm certainly not the greatest programmer in the
world and theres guys my age (27) that are doing amazing shit in PHP, SQL
and C++ that I could only dream of doing. Theres better, probably more
better fufilling hobbies than this, but we do it with passion (no pun
intended), just like the guys that could talk for hours about sports or
cars.

Anyways, its late... thats my thought for the night. :-)
