subject: modem speeds

Hello there Alex ....

 AM> Hi Randall,

AM>> Yeah, I thought I'd get replies saying that. It sounds

AM>> like bull to me too, but when both ends report it, I believe it.

 AM>> I

 RL>> I don't!!

AM> Well, whether you believe it or not doesn't worry me, I

AM> trust my eyes and I trust my watch. Perhaps the compression

I'd suggest glasses and a new timepiece!

AM> routine got confused, and the flow control was going psycho. It

AM> was going about 3500cps most of the time, then it would belt out

AM> about 20K really fast in short bursts every 30 seconds.

AM>> also timed it using my watch, at 3300cps it'll do 1000000

AM>> bytes in 4:58, it was below 4 minutes when it reached 1,000,000

AM>> bytes, and I trust my watch. Telix also reported the same thing.

 AM>> The file was 1.6MB.

 RL>> It's impossible, Alex. It's that simple.

AM> A 33.6K modem can pump 4000 cps, and 56.6K modems work on

       ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Under sterile conditions that is possibly achievable. (Bill..Russell??)

Still a long way short of 4290 tho'.

BTW what's 56.6K modems have to do with this??

AM> standard lines (I think), it's the terminal that slows the

AM> transfer down. Perhaps the terminal I go through is one of the

There is a theoretical maximum that is achievable at this speed. Your

4290cps is way beyond this and is not possible.

AM> new ones, my lines could be very good. Besides, I think that for

They'd have to be better than "very good", they'd have to be cable. :=)

AM> the 33.6K modems they just use the same chipset as in the 28.8

 AM> and modify the BIOS.

So what's the point here??

AM>>> end it reported 4290 cps average. What do you think?

Still incorrect.

AM>>> This modem is a Netcomm Roadster V34, and the highest CPS rate

AM>>> I ever got before was 3390 cps in the same situation as above.

 RL>>> ^^^^^

 AM>

AM>> Why did you highlight the before bit? I changed nothing,

AM>> and it was definitely a ZIP file. Why don't you try the BBS?

AM>> It's called Stargate and it's in Melbourne, don't have the

AM>> number on hand but it's in the VIC BBS listing.

RL>> What for? The 4290cps is pure nonsense.

AM> Got 3500 cps on my last upload. These files are definitely

I won't argue that!

AM> ZIP files because I compressed them myself with the -EX switch.

I wont argue this either.

RL>>> Even that is good for a Roadster. The 4290 is not even

RL>>> remotely possible giving your example above.

AM> Well, I uploads about 10% faster than it downloads usually.

AM>> Hey, 3390 is good for any modem. In a magazine I read, the

RL>> Magazine articles rarely generate "real time" operations

RL>> in their tests. In the field the Roadster is an average

 RL>> performer.

AM> So how fast does your modem go? Whether it's 8 BIT or not,

AM> it'll still go the maximum symbol rate allowed on a standard

AM> phone line, and it has done so.

Nowhere near 4290cps.
