There is very little "hard" science in any of Verne's book except
for the science of his day. "Around the World in 80 Days" is not
only possible at the time, but an American Woman Journalist did it in less
time shortly after the book came out. Her name escapes me. Most of the
invention Verne mentions in "Paris in the Twentieth Century had roots
in the 1860s. The calculating machine, Babbage anyone? Facsimile machines
existed at the time. Canals of course, pneumatic and electric power were
both being experimented on. However no where is the internal combustion
engine seen and people are still writing with quill pens.
The chief entertainment is plays, quickly and cheaply made, but Edison
had not invented the motion picture yet and Verne didn't think of the idea.

Verne got lucky with is submarine and his moon craft. Of prediction I
prefer Clarke. At least he invented something that came to pass that he
thought of first. However even Clarke didn't get it quite right. His
communication satellite are space station with people manning the
switchboards. He didn't cotton to the idea that computers would be small
enough and powerful enough to handle phone switching.
