The United States government owns and operates 1200 airplanes.
These are civilian aircraft of 100 different varieties owned and
operated by civilian government agencies.
The cost of the aircraft has been estimated at $2 billion. The
depreciation runs at least $200 million a year. The annual upkeep costs
another $800 million.
Because the planes are not standardized, each different
model--from over 25 different manufactures----requires its own specially
trained pilot, mechanics, and individual spare parts, raising the cost
even further.
