subject: Zoltrix 14k4 - help!

I have a Zoltrix 14k4 fax modem, and a small problem. As a general rule,
it's a fairly OK modem. So it dosn't have v42bis compression and MNP 4,927,
but it works. Other than one problem - it doesn't want to recognise the busy
and other tones. I've managed to track the problem down to the `X' setting
in the NVRAM - specifically, the X1 setting I have set. This, according to a
little book of tricks I found a while ago, says the following:

Extended message set with CONNECT XXXX when blind dialed.

Now, I take this to mean either it dials and connects or times out. Correct?

I tried changing the X setting to 3, which is the following:

Ignores dial tone with BUSY message sent if busy detected. Sends CONNECT
XXXX when connection made by blind dialling.

OK, this means the same as above but it also says BUSY sometimes. Am I right?
It does the same thing as X1 - it doesn't detect BUSY.

Next, X4. This says:

Extended message set with all messages: NO DIALTONE, BUSY or CONNECT XXXX.

This should give us everything. Unfortunately, it doesn't. It goes to dial,
gives me a dialtone, then it goes and comes with a NO DIALTONE
message just as it's about to dial.

Anybody kind enough to help me here? BTW, X2 gives same result as X4, and X0
I haven't tried because that would be going backwards. I want to be able to
detect a BUSY tone.

See ya,
        Maddy
