The basic advice is usually to turn off any default services you don't need
that are listed in /etc/inetd.conf.  It may also help to set up a firewall
so you can monitor the connections made to your server and filter out any
unwanted traffic (both inbound and outbound).

The author may be a bit alarmed if they heard you say that!  From memory
IRex isn't open source so you should be particularly wary making
assumptions about its level of security.  Which isn't to say it isn't
secure, of course...
