The "disease" problem with diesel fuel is well known to turbine aircraft
pilots and mechanics and is caused by microbes that actually grow in
petroleum products. The residue of these microbes causes etching of the fuel
tanks and lines because of the acidic nature of the resdiue, which by the
way, often looks and feels very slimy. It has been known to plug fuel
filters. Almost all turbine (jet) fuel now contains a biocide that kills
these microbes and also keeps any water entrained in the fuel from forming
ice. One such product is called "PRIST." There are similar and cheaper
products for truck diesel fuels that will do the same job.
