You dont have to change the language, you only have to change the keyboard 
layout!
If you set it to 'US international' you get 'dead-keys'. Keys that act as a 
prefix to other keys so they can be combined to special characters, like the 
accented characters we love in europe. (Some of the other keyboard settings 
also have this feature, other merely swap keys to their local mapping).
Setting the keyboard layout to US makes all keys behave like they are labeled 
on the keys themselves. (assuming you have a standard US keyboard)
