FH> I open WFW 3.11 and get 18529K free memory (on a 8 MB PC). I run PFW
FH> 4.5 and get 16991K. Then, I open and close many times a Borland
FH> Demo form (such as Scuba Diving/Fishes), thus preventing people
FH> assuming there should be something wrong with my ObjectPAL
 FH> programming.
FH> After 5 min., I quit Paradox and get only 18478K. So, where are the
FH> missing 51K ? It doesn't seem a lot, but you can waste much more
FH> memory if you open/close forms for a longer time. I tried this
FH> several times with consistent results. In addition, I am wondering
FH> why Borland found it useful to deliver PFW with TUTILITY !!
Not releasing the variables from memory causes the lost memory problem. I
have the same Borland demo also and do not find that happening. I tried it
several times and could not duplicate the memory loss as you described.
Tutility is most useful if you get a system crash which can be all to common
in windows.
FH> BTW, you found that a minimum of 10 MB fixed the problem. Does it
FH> mean that with 8 MB - which is usual on most PCs (well, it's better
 FH> than 4 MB!) - you'll get problems with PFW ?
I found that the extra 2MB really speeds up performance. Most apps that
require 8MB usually run great with just a little more memory. I have found
that I don't really have problems with 4MB (I usually test my apps on a
DX2-66 with 4MB) but, the performance is so greatly improved with more memory
it's better to use as much as possible. I do require my customers to have at
least a 486DX33 and 8MB uf they want to run any windows database. If they are
on a network (most are) I usually talk them into 12 or 16MB per machine.
