BOB MOYLAN spoke of Spelling... to DAN TRIPLETT on 09-28-96
BM>Dan Triplett On (08 Sep 96) was overheard to say to Charles Beams
BM> DT> I have watched 5,6 and 7 year olds children playing soccer. I
BM> DT> don't think they should be allowed to play soccer at such a
BM> DT> young age because they have no concept of team work, a concept
BM> DT> essential to a good soccer team.
BM> --------8<--------
BM> I have coached little league baseball since my oldest son was 6
BM>(he's 30 something now) I am still coaching because my youngest is
BM>now involved in the sport. You are correct, when they are that age
BM>they don't have any of those concepts. If one were to accept your
BM>line of reasoning merely by taking these children to ball games,
BM>allowing them to watch and then trying to emulate what they have
BM>seen they will eventually get it and become proficient ball players.
BM>What do you think those coaches are doing out there? They are
BM>teaching the rules of the game, how to play the various positions,
BM>how to hold and swing the bat, how to field the ball, how and where
BM>to throw the ball when they catch or pick it up. These skills are
BM>practiced until they become almost second nature. It's the same for
BM>any other sport.
Yes....I was being facetious. If you were following the entire thread
you would have understood I was trying to sound ridiculous. I never
suggested a line of reasoning that children should be "watchers" and
learn by seeing. I have always believed in learning by doing and my
posts have clearly stated this.
BM> DT> Their ball handling skills are awful and yet these
BM> DT> kids are allowed to play in organized games! Unthinkable!
BM> Assuming you have a PE teacher at your school ask for his or her
BM> opinion of 5, 6, 7 year olds playing these sports and what benefit
BM> kids get from PE.
I am fully aware of all the benefits (my children played and I was at
all the games...and I still go to the games of my kindergarten
students).
BM> DT> Charles, many skills are progressive and develop on a continuum.
BM> Yes but they have to be taught, errors correct as they occur and
BM> practiced.
BM>... Those who say it can't be done shouldn't interrupt those who are
BM>doing it
I think you missed my point entirely.....
