I've played a number of lower line acoustics lately, including Yamaha.
I've been truly disappointed by the sound of every one.  Everything I've
tried under $500 has sounded like plastic.  Can't find a lefty over $500
to check out so I can't comment on them.
I base my comparison on my ancient Ibeenhad V302 12 string.  This guitar
couldn't have cost me more than about $200 at the time, but has tons
of bottom end and a lack of plasticky high end.
I don't know if everyone it trying to be Ovation or not, but it sure
sounds like it.  Let's just pray that the amp mfgrs don't want to be
Peavey any time soon!  :)
