i just tried mine using Telix 3.22 DOS starting at a terminal speed of
57600, note after i change the port speed all i type is ATI4 and the
modem senses the change and adjusts.

The modem changes speed without problem, i'd say there is something
wrong with your modem.

 PE> 2. Regularly getting 26400 connects with a Netcomm instead of
 PE> 28800.

i only use to get 21600 with M11F's 24000->26400 with early M34F's and
26400->28800 with later M34F's. BTW what type Netcomm are you
connecting to.
