The meter today stands on about 26 years of 'being together'. I know, it
doesn't mean anything.
I've learned that completely loose from the fact that our marriage
"works" for the moment it is far cheaper, and above all
convenient, to be married.
Only one set of all household appliances, only one set of costs related to
the operation of the 'business' that a life with two (or more) is. So if
two decide to call it a day and there's no pressing need for everybody to
go their own way it makes economical sense to organise their lives
together. I'm certain this reasoning out of convenience is far more common
than we are ready to accept. After all, we hardly have a clue what goes on
in the neighbours' bedroom (unless they are very noisy and/or explicit).
