Most batteries are happiest with a tapering charge from what I've read.

My old home-made charger works great. It's only capable of about 6 amps
continuous, has a Variac on the primary so I can set whatever I want, along
with a timer to shut it off. It'd be nice to have a bit more capacity, but
it's not bad.
