subject: 10/22 accuracy improver!

JS>VH>Maybe you're not the guy to ask -- since you've sunk a lot of effort in
JS>VH>your 10/22 -- but answer me honestly: Which goodies and modifications
JS>VH>would you pick, and in which order, if you wanted accuracy at a low
JS>VH>cost?
JS>Well, I _don't_ want to spend a _lot_ of money on it, or I'd have gotten
JS>a drop in stock, shilen fluted barrel, etc. I'm going on the premise
JS>that my time does not count towards the cost in this case:
JS>In order:
JS>Trigger job: drop to about 2# pull, polishing the sear, installing
JS>trigger stops. Or a better trigger/hammer assy., Volquartson makes them
JS>I think.
Agreed. Without a good trigger, you'll never get maximum accuracy
potential out of the rifle.
JS>I'm partial to a scope, because of my mild myopia, except that it's
JS>fallen apart (too much banging around in a soft case) too often the
JS>bushnell sportview 3x9 32mm has been okay, the fixed 4x should be fine
JS>too.
A scope is a necessity on a fine rifle, in my opinion -- I had an
aperture sight on my .22 when I was a kid, and shot small bore in
college (again with iron sights) and spent 22 years in the Infantry, so
I have a LOT of experience with irons. But I have irons only on my
muzzle loaders and on my .30-30 saddle rifle.
I also say a hard case is a necessity. I keep my .22 Kimber in a hard
case behind the seat of my pickup.
JS>The $100 bull barrel from Midway is awfully nice if you really want to
JS>crank things in tighter, and a 3/4" diameter sanding drum gives just
JS>about the perfect groove diameter (.920 nominal???) in the factory stock.
Barrel and stock would be last on my list -- after I was sure I could
outshoot the existing barrel and stock.
JS>And- enough to spend on some various ammo to find what works best.
JS>Winchester powerpoints work very well accuracy wise, and they expand well
JS>in water, while the winchester 37gr solid Super-X group nicely and don't
JS>expand in water. Remington Viper work well in the new midway bull
JS>barrel, stingers come out too fast for the tighter twist: their group
JS>size doubled.
I go with whatever's cheapest -- and buy it by the case.
JS>I'm going to give the snortview one more round with epoxy this time...
JS>Heck, at this rate I'll be sending my resume to Carl Zeiss medical optics
JS>next... :-)
Try Burris -- I think you'll like it. I have two Burris scopes, a 4X on
my .22 Kimber and a 3X9 on my .22 Mag Ruger 77/22.
