What could the problem be? Most modems I'm aware of can be forced to connect at a selected speed, or "only speed nnnn or below" in NVRAM. Likely possiblity is that some friendly bit of software reprogrammed her modem for her - effectively installing a 2400 baud speed limit. Alternatively, it could be a mislabeled bit of hardware, and someone's dumped an ancient 2400 baud modem on the lady. From the listed symptoms, either is possible. Manual labor time, granted that a manual is available. Never heard of the brand. Anything's possible - could be an excellent bit of gear out of IBM Japan (near certain extreme quality) or it could be a heap of junk no more entitled to an IBM label than it is a genuine "quality circle inspected" sticker. If your lass doesn't have the skill to read the manuals and comprehend, she's in need of front up, identify problem, and hopefully fix help.
